In line at the supermarket today, when my elbow brushed against the woman’s arm behind me, I pulled away and apologized.
“I’m sorry,” I said. Then I wondered: For what?
Society urges us to defend our space. We build walls and fences to protect our property. We draw lines to keep people outside the bubble of our comfort zone. In doing so, we also isolate ourselves from each other, sacrificing one of the most essential survival elements: human contact.
Touch plays a vital role in our physical and psychological health. When you hug someone, your body releases a hormone called Oxytocin, which reduces anxiety. Additionally, your blood pressure drops and you relax. For a newborn baby and toddler, your sense of touch develops your child’s physical, emotional, and eventually, social well-being.
Depression, bad moods, anxiety, and withdrawing from society might be signs that a person lacks physical contact. In addition, touch-deprived individuals may be more prone to alexithymia, a condition that inhibits people from expressing and interpreting their emotions.
As a massage and reiki therapist, I provide mindful touch in an environment where people can experience intimacy without fear. The proper touch reminds the body of its capacity of self-heal.
There is no magic in my healing hands. Human beings require human contact. The secret ingredient of my success as a healer is the soul-to-soul connection I create, an ancestral quality we crave as much as food and water. Our DNA demands it.
So next time I brush against someone while standing in line, my new response will be: “You’re welcome!”
